Building Projects
The average cost for a Habitat home in the South
Central Minnesota affiliate is $100,000. The money invested
in the construction of the home is returned to Habitat as
the mortgage is paid off, and then the money is reinvested
to build more homes. Essentially, donations become part of
an endowment for the affiliate, which allows it to
continually build more houses.
The Habitat houses are built by volunteers with the help of
the partner families, who invest 500 hours of work on their
houses or on fundraising activities. In addition, the St.
Peter Chapter has a unique relationship with the St. Peter
High School Building Trades class. Each year, the class
builds a house at the school, and then in June the house is
moved to a lot where Habitat volunteers finish it. This
partnership has enabled the St. Peter Chapter to complete a
house every year.
