Partner Families

Families work together with Habitat for Humanity volunteers to build the houses. Each family puts in 500 hours of work on their house, on other houses, and on fundraising activities. When the house is completed, the family purchases it with a standard 15 to 30 year mortgage from Habitat. No interest is charged on the mortgage, which renders the house affordable to people who do not qualify for standard bank mortgages.

Criteria for Partner Families

There are three standard criteria for choosing an individual or a family to be Habitat partners.

1. Degree of need for adequate housing
a) Safety
b) Overcrowding
c) Affordability (more than 30% of income going to housing)
d) Inability to get conventional homeownership / Income Maximums

2. Ability to pay
a) Cost of housing should be a blessing, not a burden

3. Willingness to partner with Habitat for Humanity
a) Put in 300-500 hours of work depending on the family size
b) Work with their family partner
c) Attend classes and Homeowner Advisory Council Meetings
