Volunteers
Volunteers are the heart and soul of Habitat for
Humanity, and we need your help to end sub-standard
housing. Volunteer opportunities are available in
construction, fundraising, public relations, education,
family partnership, and family selection. As a volunteer
for Habitat, you have the chance to help others as well as
to learn new skills and have fun! You may volunteer with
Habitat as an individual or with a group. Volunteering is a
great way for clubs, businesses, church groups and
organizations to work together, build stronger friendships,
and meet new community members. If you are interested in
volunteering, please contact the affiliate office by
telephone or e-mail and ask for the Volunteer Coordinator
for the St. Peter Chapter.

Volunteer Opportunities
•
Construction
worker: Volunteers build walls, hang drywall,
shingle the roof, put up siding and so much more. There is
no experience necessary, since our crew leaders are willing
to teach new skills to anyone interested in learning. There
are volunteers on-site at various times during the week, as
well as Saturdays.
•
Volunteer Crew Leaders: Crew
Leaders are responsible for overseeing volunteer activities
on the work site. For this job, volunteers need to have
previous construction experience.
•
Volunteer Host/Safety Person: This
job requires that you can sign people in and have the
appropriate paperwork in place for the volunteer, orient
volunteers to the site and watch for safety concerns and
issues while on the work site. Training will be provided.
•
Chapter Committee Member: There is
work to be done even if you are unable to pound nails. The
St. Peter Chapter has committees that are in need of your
skills (Building, Site Selections, Family Partners, Family
Selection, Church Relations/Public Relations/Fundraising).
Volunteers on these committees coordinate the building,
work with partner families, recruit partner churches, write
articles for the newspaper, manage the website, educate
others about housing issues, plan fundraising events, and
much more. For a more thorough description of the
committees, see the page on the
St. Peter
Chapter.
•
Special Event Volunteer: If you
would like to volunteer for a one-time special event, there
are many smaller tasks you can do for the committees, such
as helping with fundraising events, performing data entry,
making food for Habitat volunteers, etc.
•
Student Volunteer: All over this
country students are joining in the battle against
sub-standard housing through Habitat's Campus Chapter Youth
Program (CCYP). High school and college chapters have three
primary functions: joining with the local affiliate and
home owners to help build houses; educating your school and
community about affordable housing and Habitat; and raising
funds to help build more houses. Many campus chapters also
coordinate Collegiate Challenge trips. These trips take
students all over the country to help build homes at other
Habitat Affiliates during spring break. Currently, local
campus chapters are located at MSU at Mankato and Gustavus
Adolphus College. Bethany Lutheran College is also
exploring the possibility of becoming a recognized chapter
by HFHI.
